This is a bridge connecting Boston to Cambridge.

Apparently back in the day a group of frat boys from MIT got very wasted and decided to measure the bridge in SMOOTS, this being their friend, John Smoots (probably most wasted), who was rolled across the bridge. Every couple rolls the boys made a mark of where Smoots was. The bridge is 360 Smoots plus one ear.

Every year the city repaints the markings of Smoot.
